In the last post, we saw how important it is to love and fear God while we are young because that is our foundation! If we don’t have the fear of God and love for God in our hearts, everything else won’t matter! Therefore, if you haven’t already, please take a moment to read our previous blog post!
Many of us serve our country by working and paying taxes; some even join the armed forces. Others take part in volunteering at their community centre by feeding the homeless, helping single mothers, and so on! It is a requirement that every citizen of a country must serve in one way or another! To serve means to perform duties or services for (another person or an organization), according to the Oxford dictionary. When we serve, we are performing our duties! Likewise, In the kingdom of heaven, nothing less is expected of us! We must serve our King; we must serve His Kingdom!
You’re never too young to serve God! As a matter of fact, He actually desires that you begin now while you are young. This is why He said, “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth!” In our Youth is when we are the strongest physically; That is when we begin to develop some of our giftings. So, have you ever wondered why our enemy, Satan, seeks to destroy us in our young years? Why is this the time when temptation is always near and we want to try destructive things? Why does he attack the youth so much? Well, it is quite obvious! The enemy hates when we serve God and not him! Therefore, he wants to distract us and keep us away from God as early possible, at the time when we can do the most for God, so that we can spend all of our time and energy serving his kingdom instead. I want you to take this opportunity to make Satan angry: decide today that you will serve God and His Kingdom!
Serving God in your youth is the best thing you can do. Maybe there is an ability, a gift that God has given to you to serve him with, but your focus is only to make money with it and show off to the world that you have a gift. Or maybe you fear people so much that you worry about what they will think of you if you start using that gift to serve God and His Kingdom! Allow me to reassure you that no amount of money or fame in this world is worth more than the joy and peace that comes with serving God. And there’s absolutely nothing that anyone can think of you that will replace all the amazing things that God thinks about you! When all your time and energy is dedicated to serving the kingdom of Satan, you will never be satisfied. Your money will never be enough, the number of followers you have will never be enough, and this is where many people start turning to drugs and alcohol and other destructive things because they are seeking to find satisfaction. Once the devil lures you into serving his kingdom, you’re left striving to accomplish your goals and to fetch for the things you need. But here’s the good news! When you serve God you won’t need to strive for anything because he becomes your strength in your times of weakness; Just when you think you’re not able to do such and such, miraculously you will receive the strength and help that you need. You won’t lack anything. You will always be satisfied! He even tells you in his Word not to worry about what you will eat or drink or what you will wear because your heavenly Father knows that you need these things. This is the beauty of serving God! He will never leave you to fend for yourself; He is always with you. He is a good Father who takes care of his children.
I want to encourage you to serve him while you are still young. God can use you even now; He wants to use you for his glory! He can do so much with you! It is mind-blowing what God can do with you, to you, through you and for you. Have you heard of prophet Jeremiah, in the bible? Well he was young too. And guess what? His age did not stop God from using his life as a prophet to nations. In the book of Jeremiah 1:5, God said to this young man: “I knew you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born, I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to nations.” Do you know what Jeremiah’s response was at first? Here’s what he said: “O sovereign Lord, I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!” This may be what some of you are directly or indirectly saying to God. But I love God’s response to Jeremiah, he said: “Don’t say ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. And don’t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and I will protect you. I the LORD, have spoken!” Now that you’ve read this passage, you have no excuse young people! It is time to start serving God. I urge you to start somewhere. I’ve heard my spiritual father Shyju Mathew say (I’m paraphrasing): “If you won’t even hold a broom, why should you be given a mic?” This is so true! Don’t skip the process! So, start by helping clean your church, or your youth room. Help someone who is carrying a heavy load in their hands. Help an elderly person. Help a mother carry their baby’s bag. Help with the kid’s church or the media team. There is so much you can do! And as you discover yourself, and as God takes you on a journey of discovering your purpose, serve him in the little that He gives you. And if you remain faithful and humble yourself (not thinking and acting like you’re better than everyone else), in due time, He will lift you up and He will entrust you with more! And don’t forget: He will be with you!
It wouldn’t be right of me to not warn you about one of the greatest challenges that a servant of God will face, which is: Being consistent! This is a challenge for anyone who wants to serve God! When you start doing a certain ministry at church or helping in any capacity, there is always a point that you will reach where you will want to quit and move on to the next thing! But my encouragement to you today is to keep going when this happens; keep pushing until God clearly asks you to move on to something else (be sure that God is telling you to do so!). The excuse of many Christians is, “I feel like my season is over in this!” are you sure? Did you really consult God? Or, are you simply having trouble being consistent? I truly understand the struggle when your flesh no longer wants to do something, but it is in these moments that you grow more! These are the moments when you get the opportunity to die to your flesh! No cross-country runner gets a medal for giving up halfway through! Those who are consistent and perseveres to the end are those who receive their reward! Consistency is very important in the kingdom of God! Those who are consistent can be trusted with more and surely they will be rewarded!
May the Lord grant you the desire to serve Him and His Kingdom! And may you be consistent in all that He gives you to do!
Below are a few questions that I want to leave with you to meditate on throughout the week.
Love, Shéshé
Questions to meditate on:
What am I doing to serve the kingdom of God with all my time and strength?
If I’m not serving yet, where can I start?
Am I consistent in the things that I do for the Kingdom?
***Please keep in mind that in some churches, you must go through a certain process before you can serve in some ministries of that church! Find out what that process might be, then begin serving!
